Jodhpur Travel Guide
Everything we tell guests before they arrive — what to see, how long it takes and where to eat.
Places to visit in Jodhpur
Most first-time visitors build their trip around Mehrangarh Fort, and it deserves the time. From the ramparts you can see exactly why Jodhpur is called the Blue City — a sea of indigo houses spreading out below, with the haveli somewhere in the middle of it.
After the fort, the usual shortlist is Jaswant Thada, the clock tower and Sardar Market, Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell, Umaid Bhawan Palace and Mandore Gardens. The first four sit close together near the old city; the last two need a rickshaw or taxi.
Things to do
Walk the blue lanes early, before the traffic and the heat. Sit on a rooftop for chai at sunset. Spend an hour bargaining in Sardar Market. Eat mirchi bada from a stall rather than a restaurant. Take a day trip out to the desert or a village if you have time to spare.
None of this needs to be booked weeks ahead. Tell us what interests you when you arrive and we will tell you what is realistic for the time you have.
One-day itinerary
Morning: Mehrangarh Fort as it opens, then Jaswant Thada on the way down. Afternoon: rest through the hottest hours, then the clock tower and Sardar Market. Evening: dinner on a rooftop with the fort lit up.
One full day covers the essentials if you start early and stay in the old city — which is the main reason to sleep here rather than near the highway.
Two-day itinerary
Day one as above. Day two: a slow morning heritage walk through the blue lanes, Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell, then Umaid Bhawan Palace and Mandore Gardens in the afternoon. Keep the last evening free for shopping and food.
Two days is the comfortable answer for Jodhpur. Three if you want a desert or village outing as well.
Family, couple and weekend trips
Families: keep the fort for the morning, plan a long midday break, and treat the rooftop as the evening plan. A family room means nobody is split across floors.
Couples: the lanes, the stepwell cafés and rooftop dinners are the best of Jodhpur. Two nights is enough for a relaxed weekend.
Weekend trips: arrive Friday night, fort on Saturday morning, markets Saturday evening, and a slow Sunday walk before you travel on.
Local food
Jodhpur eats well and cheaply. Mirchi bada and pyaaz kachori for breakfast, dal baati churma for a proper meal, makhania lassi when the heat gets serious, and Rajasthani sweets from the shops near the clock tower.
Ask us for directions to the stalls rather than searching for restaurants — the best of it is street food.
Shopping
Sardar Market and the lanes around the clock tower are where most people shop: block-printed textiles, bandhani, spices, silver, bangles, leather juttis and antiques.
Prices are negotiable almost everywhere. Ask us for a fair range before you start so you know what you are aiming for.
How to reach Jodhpur
By train: Jodhpur Junction is about 2 km from the haveli, with connections from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
By air: Jodhpur Airport is about 6 km away, with domestic flights from Delhi and Mumbai.
By road: the central bus stand is about 2 km away, and Jodhpur is a natural stop on a Rajasthan road trip between Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Jaipur.
Best time to visit
October to March is the comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings — this is when Jodhpur is busiest. April to June is very hot; sightseeing works best early morning and after sunset. July to September brings some rain and a greener landscape.
Travel tips
Wear shoes you can walk in — the old city is uneven. Carry water and a hat between March and October. Agree rickshaw fares before you get in. Keep some cash for markets and street food. Cover shoulders and knees for temple visits.
Staying inside the old city saves you the daily commute most visitors do without realising it.
